December Meeting Update

Greetings, (•◡•) /

I hope everyone has gotten lots of rest and are ready to continue on to the end of the year. ᕙ(^▿^-ᕙ) I am here to introduce the next meeting that will take place in December. It will take place on Sunday, December 13th from 1:30- 4:30pm. The speaker is Yasuhiro Fujiwara. He has experienced teaching English in various settings at the secondary and tertiary levels. Having worked at Aichi University of Education for several years, he is now associate professor of applied linguistics at Meijo University, Japan. His main interest lies in EIL/ELF/WE, corpus linguistics, and second language acquisition. The meeting will take place at Toyohashi Arts Theatre Plat (large meeting room), close to Toyotetsu’s Toyohashi Station. Here is the location: https://goo.gl/maps/YpF8Shvwp3hUdq336. ☜(ˆ▿ˆc)

Their presentation will have two purposes. One is to introduce recent developments in language testing from the perspectives of World Englishes (WE) and English as a lingua franca (ELF). In short, WE respects the diversity of Englishes and evaluators while ELF assesses how learners achieve an assigned task while accommodating to and communicating with others using various strategies. The other is to open a critical discussion on these WE- and ELF-informed testing practices as well as traditional native-oriented testing practices, considering what is really desirable for ELT here in Japan. Apparently, there is no single answer on this issue, but it is really clear that we need to face it as teaching practitioners because the use of English around the world has surely been changing.

During the meeting, around the half way point, 2:10-2:20 Break Time, Discussion with participants ( ◑‿◑)ɔ┏?–?┑٩(^◡^ )
